Feel Important…Stay Healthy
Sponsored by La Porte Hospital Foundation, the Lil’ Fish Club Program is designed to help children learn about healthy habits and behavior to prevent health problems before they begin. The Wellness Resource Center has partnered with local area schools, both public and private, to conduct health assessments and promote positive self-image among fourth and fifth graders.
Each fall, a written questionnaire covering nutrition, personal safety, and physical fitness ability measures the health status of each student. Education is provided to the students throughout the year, on topics such as: nutrition; alcohol and tobacco use prevention; personal and dental hygiene; self-esteem and positive image; and heart health and exercise. The students’ progress is measured the following October.
In 2006, the La Porte Hospital Foundation received a grant from the American Dental Association (ADA) on behalf of the Lil’ F.I.S.H Club. Through this grant, Lil’ F.I.S.H. Club was able to provide additional health information and purchase battery-operated toothbrushes for every fourth grade participant.
